Data Distribution and Management System

Data Distribution and Management (DDM) is the core of the Jeppesen Ground Tools Suite, providing a global ability to manage the configuration of all three classes of EFBs and mixed fleet configurations.  Tail numbers and review devices are configured and managed within DDM.  Electronic content is assigned to tails to ensure that updates are properly routed for delivery to the correct aircraft.  Checkpoint controls for content and tails are an inherent part of DDM.  Customer-configurable filters provide an easy mechanism to manage large fleets of airplanes and large numbers of content packages.  When content is received from any publisher, checkpoint controls can be set up to allow for quality approval before delivery to the end point.  Engineering and Maintenance has the ability to receive the electronic parts and verify Certificates of Compliance before approving for final delivery.  Multiple checkpoint controls and accompanying review groups can be set up, stored, and automatically applied, based on customer-defined custom content types.  Content can also be flagged to go automatically to the recipients without approvals, if desired.

The following lists the functionality provided by DDM:

  • Delivery of Jeppesen content
  • Delivery of customer content
  • Fleet configuration management
  • Content delivery management
  • Virus check of all content accepted for delivery, regardless of origin
  • Content checkpoints for approval
  • Customer-configurable email notifications for content reviewers
  • Delivery client for each EFB
  • Client software for ground PC recipients
  • Client software for ground EFB recipients
  • Redundant software for high availability
  • Package integrity ensured during all phases of delivery
  • Delivery session resumption for broken connection, ensuring timely complete delivery of content
  • Ability to set up security, users, and recipients
  • Support for wireless delivery of content via Gatelink and TWLU equipped airplanes
  • Auditing and reporting of all actions performed on content and delivery to airplanes
  • Role-based control over access to funtions

The DDM operates either on a Jeppesen Hosted/ASP model with all content hosted in Denver, or with a Local Edition (DDM LE) model where the servers reside within the customers IT infrastructure.

In the Jeppesen hosted DDM configuration, the systems run as a service where storage and computing facilities are remote to the customer.  This is designed to reduce implementation time, and on-going cost of operations.

In the DDM LE configuration, storage and computing is done within the customer's IT infrastructure.  The DDM LE model has certain benefits, such as greater local control of content, less concern or impact from Internet bottlenecks, greater control over security with local authentication, higher performance, and possible integration with customer back-end systems.
