Jeppesen Marine announced today that it is launching a new product that – together with the Norwegian Hydrographic Service – will provide the world’s mariners with a single authoritative source for charts. The product, called Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service, effectively combines two services into a single offering that ensures mariners easy access to the most authoritative charts available, from the world’s leading provider of marine electronic charts.
Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service will ensure that mariners are always navigating by an approved Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC) from PRIMAR (a worldwide ENC service operated by the Norwegian Hydrographic Service on a non-profit basis) or other hydrographic offices, when these are available. When an ENC is not available, the service will notify the navigator (during route planning or navigation) and run from the high-quality private vector data produced and distributed by Jeppesen Marine. Previously, these two sources of data were sold and distributed separately.
“The benefit for navigators is immediate and intuitive. With one service, navigators know that they are always using the best chart data available,” said Jeppesen Norway managing director Tor Svanes. “I hope that this clarifies for the mariners what is and what is not an ENC once and for all. For companies that own and manage ships, the Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service is ideal, as it creates a single, cost-effective source for the shipping market’s best navigational data."
“Previously, mariners felt compelled to choose between complete global coverage and official ENCs. Now they get both, in one product, easily and cost-efficiently,” said Gerry Larson-Fedde, director of the Norwegian Hydrographic Service. “Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service gives mariners a one-stop-shop, which we know is in demand from regular contact with users.”
To customers of Jeppesen Marine, the introduction of Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service will create no new challenges for purchasing, operations or training. The product will optimize chart provision from the customers’ perspective; the ECDIS will automatically utilize ENCs when they are available for a given geographical zone, and suppress other data. When an ENC is not available, the ECDIS will notify navigators and route planners, and run from Jeppesen Marine’s global coverage of high-quality vector chart data. This prevents both the inefficient overlapping of data and the usage of non-official data when an ENC is available.
“In theory, the Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service will supply ENCs, and only ENCs, to customers once global ENC coverage is complete,” said Svanes. “In the meantime, the service will ensure navigators are consistently using the most accurate charts available at any time, whether it be an ENC or not.”
Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service will be installed in the course of minutes with one DVD. Thereafter, it can be updated either via a single DVD or via a free download (when and where Internet connectivity makes this possible). Further, Jeppesen Marine’s Dynamic Licensing will ensure that navigators pay only for those chart licenses that they need, when they are using the Jeppesen PRIMAR ENC Service. Additional navigation services and information, such as weather routing and route planning, will be available as before.
