Enhance Safety

As global operations continue in this complex and dynamic environment , it becomes more common for aircrew to operate on unfamiliar airfields and in unknown airspace.  Even more challenging, aircrews tasked for short notice deployment are likely to deploy with outdated, inaccurate, or incomplete navigational information.  This increases the likelihood of civil and military airspace violations, runway incursions, or even international airspace violations.

The Military EFB Document Viewer, Terminal Charts, and FLIP Viewer applications, supported by the Data Distribution and Management (DDM) system, assure that every aircrew has easy access to worldwide, up-to-date, flight critical information regardless of the source.  This includes aircraft flight manuals, checklists, and even local operating procedures documents, as well as current government or Jeppesen terminal chart procedures.

The Jeppesen Airport Moving Map, already in operational service, is designed to provide a quick reference to airport surface position to aide the pilot in runway incursion avoidance.  This application has proven during simulator trials to help provide greater awareness of taxi instructions and active runways.  Jeppesen recently obtained US FAA approval for its Airport Moving Map application for Class 2 EFB devices, and is the first and only company to have received approval.  The Jeppesen Airport Moving Map application has been in use on Class 3 EFBs for almost five years.  Approval of the Class 2 application is significant because it makes enhanced situational awareness available to a much larger group of aircraft.  Class 2 EFB hardware solutions allow airlines and military flying units to cost-effectively retrofit large fleets of existing aircraft, which, when coupled with Jeppesen Airport Moving Map, is a major step forward in reducing the risk of runway incursions.

The impact of enhanced flight safety cannot be overstated.  Ensuring that aircrews have better familiarity by using better information that can be interpreted and ingested quickly for unfamiliar environments reduces the likelihood of airspace violations and incursions.  Jeppesen's roots lie in making flight safer for the pilot, and we have applied over 75 years of that experience to our EFB software suite.  Our military customers tell us that operating safely affects every aspect of their operation, from organizational motivation, focus and morale, to reductions in mission disruption planning, to the most important aspects of keeping aircrews safe and available for tasking and improved aircraft mission readiness.
